PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Turning Points, located in Newport, Vermont, is a psycho educational day treatment program for youth with emotional and behavioral challenges and learning disabilities. Four classrooms of students in grades 1-12 provide a core curriculum which consists of language arts, science, social studies and math. A licensed special educator oversees classroom instruction and provides educational case management. Mental health case managers and therapists direct the individual therapy and other clinical services. Therapeutic behavior management occurs throughout the day as students interact with staff and their peers. These interactions and interventions help students recognize problem behaviors, develop strategies to address them, and provide opportunities to practice positive strategies. Through the efforts of Turning Points we have significantly reduced the need for students with serious behaviors to be sent to costly residential programs outside of the region.
